Analyze PrestaShop Internal Linking: Visualize Your SEO Juice

Analyze your PrestaShop store's internal linking: visualize the link graph, detect orphan pages, measure click depth, and redistribute SEO juice toward your strategic pages. Method, back-office paths, and copy-paste templates.

Analyzing the internal linking of a PrestaShop store means mapping how authority (the "SEO juice") flows from one page to another through links. On a catalog of 500, 2,000, or 10,000 references, this flow rarely happens as intended: dozens of product pages end up with no inbound links at all, buried five clicks from the homepage, invisible to Googlebot as well as to the shopper. This guide shows how to measure the real state of your internal linking, read a link graph, spot orphan pages, and redirect internal power toward the pages that actually generate revenue.

A link graph is a representation of your site's topology as nodes and edges. Each node is a page (homepage, category, product page, CMS); each edge is an internal hyperlink. Visualized, this graph reveals at a glance three things that no table of numbers shows as quickly:

  • the hubs, those large nodes toward which many links converge (often the homepage and the main categories);
  • the thematic clusters, densely interconnected (a well-linked product family);
  • the orphan pages, those isolated nodes, with no inbound edge, floating on the periphery of the graph.

Google crawls your site by following links. A page that no link points to and that no navigation path reaches is, for the crawler, nearly impossible to find: it is crawled late, rarely, and receives SEO juice close to zero.

Analyzing your PrestaShop internal linking: the 4 key indicators

A useful analysis comes down to four measurements. Here is how to obtain and interpret them.

The raw volume of internal links matters less than their distribution. A catalog can display 40,000 internal links and still be sick if 90% of them point to ten pages. Check the distribution: how many product pages receive at least one contextual link (in a description, a "related products" block, a blog article) on top of the automatic navigation links?

In PrestaShop, most links are generated by the theme (menu, breadcrumb, "Best sellers" and "New products" blocks). These links are useful but uniform: they express no editorial priority. The linking that makes the difference is the one you add by hand or with AI inside the content.

2. Click depth

Depth is the minimum number of clicks from the homepage needed to reach a page. Field rule: a strategic product page should stay within 3 clicks maximum of the homepage. Beyond 4, the crawl rate drops sharply.

On PrestaShop, depth blows up quickly because of category pagination. A category of 600 products with 30 products per page creates 20 pages; the products on page 15 end up 4-5 clicks deep. Two concrete levers in the back office:

  • Catalog > Categories: rebalance the tree structure. A category of 600 references is better split into 4 subcategories of 150.
  • Advanced Parameters > SEO & URLs, then the products-per-page setting on the theme side: raising it to 48-60 products/page mechanically reduces the number of pagination pages and brings deep product pages back up.

3. Orphan page rate

An orphan page receives no contextual inbound link and is reachable by no navigation path (category, breadcrumb, menu). This is priority number one: these pages capture almost no SEO juice.

Watch out for the classic false positive: a product listed in its category is not orphaned, even if no description mentions it — it is reachable through navigation. A serious detection accounts for both dimensions (contextual links AND navigation paths) before labeling a page as orphaned.

Where do orphans come from on PrestaShop?

  • Products removed from a category but still online (the Associations tab of the product page emptied by mistake).
  • Products attached to a hidden or unpublished category.
  • Product pages reachable only through the internal search or an old email link.
  • CMS pages created and then never linked from the menu or the footer.

4. Overall structural health

Synthesize everything into a single verdict: what share of the catalog is at depth ≤ 3 and receives at least one inbound link? Below 80% of "healthy" pages, your crawl budget is wasted on dead ends while your best product pages wait.

Where to read this data in PrestaShop

Native PrestaShop does not provide any linking map. You reconstruct it in two ways:

  • Manual approach: a crawler (such as Screaming Frog, free up to 500 URLs) exports the "Inlinks" and "Crawl Depth" columns and the list of URLs not linked internally. Then cross-reference with Google Search Console > Pages to spot the "Discovered – currently not indexed" URLs — often orphans.
  • Integrated approach: in Fexa AI, the Internal Linking & Authority section (store Settings) synthesizes detected links, orphan pages and their percentage, structural health, authority hubs, and the list of orphans to reconnect — with no manual crawl, at the scale of the entire catalog.

Moving from analysis to action

Analysis is useless without redistribution. Two complementary moves.

Push juice down from your hubs. Identify your 5-10 authority pages (homepage, flagship categories, buying guides that rank) and add contextual links from them to your strategic product pages or your pages in "striking distance" (positions 8-20). Before/after example in a category description:

Copy-paste template to link a product page to its complements, to place at the end of a product description (Catalog > Products > Description tab):

Complete your kit: [Product anchor A](URL-A), [Product anchor B](URL-B), and [Product anchor C](URL-C).

Always use a descriptive anchor (the product name or the target query), never "click here" or a bare URL.

Reconnect the orphans. For each orphan page, add at least one inbound link from a thematically close page with good depth. During a catalog-wide AI optimization, Fexa AI automatically prioritizes orphan pages as link destinations, which reintegrates them into the linking without page-by-page manual work — the real win when you have hundreds of references.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing volume with distribution: 40,000 links are worthless if long-tail product pages receive zero.
  • Over-optimizing anchors: repeating "PrestaShop SEO module" across 200 internal links is an over-optimization signal. Vary naturally.
  • Forgetting pagination and faceted filters: thousands of parameterized URLs (?color=, ?page=) dilute the crawl. Handle them via Advanced Parameters > SEO & URLs (canonical URLs) and the robots file.
  • Linking to 301 redirects or 404s: every broken internal link wastes juice. Audit your product pages' outbound links regularly.

FAQ

How many internal links per product page? Aim for 2 to 5 outbound contextual links per page (complementary products, parent category, related guide), on top of the theme's navigation links. No need to stack dozens: beyond that, each link passes an increasingly weaker share of juice.

Is an orphan page penalized by Google? No, not in the sense of a manual penalty. It is simply crawled poorly and receives few internal popularity signals, so it ranks poorly. The problem is invisibility, not a sanction.

Does PrestaShop create orphans automatically? Indirectly, yes: products removed from their category via the Associations tab, unpublished categories, CMS pages not linked to the menu. Every change to the tree structure can orphan product pages — check after any catalog reorganization.

Is the breadcrumb enough as internal linking? It prevents most orphans and sets the hierarchy, but it stays uniform: it does not send a strong editorial signal to your priority pages. Contextual linking within descriptions remains essential.

How often should you analyze your linking? A full check every quarter, and systematically after a massive product import, a category overhaul, or a migration (1.7 to 8/9). These operations are the leading causes of orphan pages appearing.
