GA4 adds a channel for AI assistant traffic
Original SourceA new traffic channel
Google Analytics added an AI Assistant channel to its default channel group in May 2026. When a visit arrives with a recognized referrer, GA4 can group it under the ai-assistant medium. The data appears in traffic acquisition reports alongside other channels.
The classification is not retroactive. It does not reconstruct older visits and may not recognize every assistant, embedded application or link without a referrer. Some traffic may remain in Direct or another channel.
Interpret the channel carefully
The report can compare sessions, engagement and conversions attributed to recognized referrals. It does not measure every interaction with an AI system and does not prove that such traffic converts better.
For a PrestaShop store, review landing pages, campaigns and associated orders. Keep campaign parameters consistent on links you control so that a genuine increase can be distinguished from a classification change.
