GA4 has a new "AI Assistant" channel: AI traffic is now measurable

Original Source

Since May 13, 2026, Google Analytics 4 shows a new native channel in its Default Channel Group: "AI Assistant". When a session arrives with a referrer recognized as an AI, GA4 automatically files it (medium ai-assistant) under this dedicated channel. For the first time, the traffic sent by AI assistants is no longer buried in "Direct" or "Referral" — it has its own row.

Where to see it in your GA4

Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, then set the primary dimension to "Session default channel group". If your site has received AI traffic since launch, "AI Assistant" appears as its own row, next to Organic Search, Direct, etc.

What GA4 recognizes… and what it misses

GA4 files referrers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok under "AI Assistant". ⚠️ Perplexity is not (yet) in the official definition — its traffic still lands in "Referral".

Two limits to know so you don't misread your numbers:

  • No backfill: GA4 only counts from launch — the AI traffic from previous months is not reconstructed.
  • Referrer-less traffic is missed: in-app browsers, native mobile apps and copy-pasted links strip the referrer and fall back into "Direct".

The direct consequence: GA4 underestimates your real AI traffic. What you see in "AI Assistant" is a floor, not the total.

Why it's a turning point for e-commerce

When Google creates an official channel for a traffic source, it's because it has become structural. AI assistants are now a front door to your catalog, just like Google Search twenty years ago. But measuring isn't enough: to capture this channel, AI must understand, cite and recommend you.

It's the other side of the same coin: Google already scores whether your site is ready for AI agents (see our article on the Agentic Browsing score). Measurement (GA4) and optimization (being readable by AI) move together.

Fexa AI gets you ready to capture this channel

Showing up in assistants' answers takes preparation. That's exactly Fexa AI's mission for your PrestaShop store:

  • Structured data (Product, FAQ, Breadcrumb JSON-LD) injected automatically — what AI reads first.
  • Descriptions and tags written to be understood by language models, not just Google.
  • Quality content, ALT and internal linking that clarify your catalog for answer engines.

GA4's "AI Assistant" channel is only going to grow. The real question: will your store be in the answers, or invisible?
